Samantha Bunch
Two tons of plastic into housing. One volunteer, everywhere at once.
Kenya · Bureau of African Affairs · Eligible Family Member
Samantha Bunch looked at the plastic waste accumulating in Nairobi and saw building materials. Her Eco-Brick Initiative turned that idea into action, diverting over two tons of plastic waste into low-cost housing materials — a model for sustainable development that addresses both an environmental problem and a housing need in a single practical solution. But Bunch's service extended well beyond the environment. She mobilized critical support for Ginko Africa, helping teenage mothers stay in school when the system had largely stopped making space for them. She provided vital assistance to Real Hope Community Orphanage. And when the April 2023 evacuation of Embassy Khartoum families brought hundreds of displaced colleagues arriving suddenly in Nairobi in shock and need, Bunch was there too — organizing donations, offering comfort, and providing practical hands-on support to people who had just lost their homes and their routines.
