Building safety — and futures — for the most vulnerable girls.
El Salvador · Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs · Eligible Family Member
When Daniela Garcia arrived at post in San Salvador in 2021, she found a group of children at Mi Casa orphanage who needed more than the orphanage could hold. She set about changing that. Garcia rallied the embassy and the broader Salvadoran community to fund a building expansion to house more orphan girls — and then went further, creating an entirely new safe home specifically for pregnant teen orphans, many of them survivors of serious abuse. She didn't stop at shelter. Garcia designed counseling and support programs tailored to these young women's specific trauma, and built a training program to help them learn how to care for themselves and their newborns. In a country with few safety nets for girls in these circumstances, she created one from scratch.
