In Kampala, George Cornick didn't find one cause to serve — he found every cause that needed him. At the Refuge of Hope refugee center, he mentored youth, taught job interview skills, and helped form a step dancing group that gave young people a new way to stand tall. With grant funding from the J. Kirby Simon Trust, he mobilized dozens of embassy community volunteers to renovate facilities for the Bless a Child Foundation — a nonprofit supporting pediatric cancer patients — painting buildings, laying vegetable gardens, and creating green spaces where children could simply play. When Afghan refugees arrived in Uganda and when an Ebola outbreak left Ugandans in quarantine, Cornick organized clothing, book, and toy drives to meet each new need. His service was not defined by a single program but by a consistent instinct: find the person who needs help, and help them.
